Every year when outdoor season rolls around, I’m reminded that there’s nothing like expecting company to light a fire under your DIY spirit. I documented this deck makeover last year when my space was looking rough after the winter, and it’s essentially the formula I follow every year.

1. Blow the Dust Away

There was a ton of leftover dust and grime from the colder months so I started my deck refresh by making a little more of a mess and blowing all of the debris away.

2. Make More Dust

The finish on my coffee table needed a little extra love, so I sanded it to prep it for a new coat of finish.

3. Clean

Not the most fun, but a crucial step in any project, it was time to clean. So I gave the deck a good scrub down with this outdoor cleaner and my trusty mop.

4. Refinish Where Needed

I touched up the deck where it needed some stain to protect the wood.

I also applied finish to the coffee table so it would look great through the warmer months and lots of entertaining.

5. Freshen Up the Decor

I even had to replace some plants that didn’t exactly thrive during the winter…but this planter is now the happy home to a new plant.

It was time to bring up the outdoor rug and roll it out. If you don’t have an outdoor rug on your deck you might just need one. It makes it feel extra cozy, like another room of your house, just outside!

The couch cushions came out of storage and got a good fluff.

I love string lights, they really add to the ambiance and elevate any outdoor space. I used my drill to hang them above the seating area.

Just like that, we’re ready to entertain! You know I love a weekend project, but a one day transformation? Even better. There’s something so satisfying about seeing maximum results and being completely done by dinnertime. I’m so excited and ready for all the summer hangs.
