Okay, technically this is two tools, but if you buy them as a pair, it’s basically a two-for-one deal, right? A cordless drill and driver set is one of the most useful starter tool combos for any DIYer. Whether you’re assembling furniture, hanging shelves, drilling pilot holes, or building your first woodworking project, these tools will get used constantly. Plus, having one tool dedicated to drilling and one for driving screws makes projects faster, easier, and way less frustrating. Luckily, they’re often sold as a set, which makes them a perfect beginner investment.

Best Entry Level: If you’re just getting started and looking for an affordable drill and driver set, I’d highly recommend the RYOBI Cordless Drill/Driver Set.
Best Value: If you’re looking for one step up from an entry drill and are you’d like a bit more power, I’d recommend trying the RIDGID Cordless Drill/Driver Set.
Best All-Around: My personal favorite set is the Makita Compact Drill/Driver Set! It’s a bit more expensive, but the compact model is perfect for smaller hands (like mine) without sacrificing power or battery life!
Tool #2: Circular Saw
The circular saw is a game-changer when it comes to making straight cuts in different materials like wood, plywood, and even metal (with the right blade). Its versatility and precision allow beginners to tackle various projects, including building shelves, cutting boards, or even constructing a basic workbench. Even cooler, by investing in the right accessories (like a rip-cut guide or a track), you can make most cuts with your circular saw and hold back on spending tons of money on a table saw for a bit!

Best All-Around: My personal choice is the Milwaukee Cordless Saw Kit! It’s a bit pricier, but this saw packs a big punch (I even use it to cut metal by swapping out the blade).

Achieving a smooth and professional finish on your woodworking projects becomes so much easier with a motorized sander in your toolkit. From refinishing furniture to preparing surfaces for paint or stain, a random orbital sander is a must-have for achieving that flawless finish… your hands will thank me later!
Sander Recommendations:
Best Entry Level: If you’re looking for a cheaper sander to start with, look no further than the RYOBI cordless sander. It gets the job done without burning a hole in your wallet!
Best Value: The Milwaukee sander is great, but costs a bit more. I still highly recommend it though!
Best Splurge: Sanders are one of those tools that I do recommend splurging on (if you can)! A really good sander is worth its weight in gold. The more power a sander has, the easier the tool is on your hands. This is the one I use, and I love it!
Tool #4: Nail Gun
Okay, let’s talk about nail guns for a second, because there are a lot of them out there. Different nailers are made for different types of projects, and I have a full breakdown of how each one works in my Nail Gun Tool School post. But for this beginner power tool guide, I’m keeping things simple and focusing on the one I recommend starting with first: the brad nailer.
The brad nailer is a must-have tool for detail work around the house, like trim work or accent walls, really anytime you’re attaching smaller pieces where screws would be too bulky or noticeable. It helps fix pieces into place quickly, leaves behind tiny holes that are easy to fill, and makes projects feel a whole lot more polished.

Best Entry Level: The RYOBI Cordless Brad Nailer has an affordable price point but packs a big punch. It’s honestly one of my favorites!
Best Value: Need some more power? Try the Milwaukee Brad Nailer. I use this nailer in my shop and I’m obsessed with it.
Tool #5: Jigsaw
If you’re looking to cut curves, intricate shapes, or even plunge cuts, a jigsaw is your go-to tool. This handheld power tool can be used on wood, plastic, or even metal, making it versatile for various DIY projects. It’s perfect for creating custom-shaped projects (like cutting boards and coasters), or even making repairs around the house. With the right blade selection and a steady hand, the jigsaw will get a lot of use!

Best Entry Level: If you’re just getting started and looking for a decently priced saw for some beginner woodworking, I’d highly recommend the RYOBI Cordless Jig Saw. This was the first one I ever had in my shop and it was awesome!
Best Value: If you’d like one step up from an entry level saw, I’d recommend trying the M18 FUEL 18-Volt Lithium-Ion Brushless Cordless Jig Saw with Free Battery! This is the saw I use in my shop and I love it!
Best All-Around: Of all of the jigsaws on the market, the DeWalt seems to be recommended the most as a top pick!
