A 389-Square-Foot Sacramento Studio Once Had Purple Carpet
Interior designer Dylan Bradley sought a home for himself that was unlike anything he grew up around. Hailing from Alaska, where he admits historic homes were rare, he wanted to find a Sacramento rental with charming, storied architectural details.
Two years ago, Dylan was living on the basement level of a multi-unit Victorian home built in 1905. However, friends who lived on the top floor told him about an empty unit. Well, it turned out it wasn’t exactly vacant, but he still fell in love with the expansive windows offering views of the trees outside.
“I found my home abandoned, with everything the previous occupant owned still left behind,” Dylan explains. “The style was unmistakably wild: half the floor was covered in chipped white peel‑and‑stick tile, while the other half was purple carpet. The main room was painted periwinkle, my bedroom eggplant, and the closets were boldly done in yellow and red.”
As an interior designer, Dylan was able to see past the apartment’s chaotic starting point. It turns out his landlord trusted him, too, and not only let him make changes, but also helped pay for them. Soon enough, the studio apartment was transformed into a “romantic and old-world” space, filled with several layered pieces.
