Quick and Easy Backyard DIY
Outdoor entertaining season is finally here, so I wanted to revisit when I helped transform my parents’ backyard into the ultimate outdoor movie theater for family parties, holiday hangouts, and cozy movie nights under the stars.
This was such a fun project, and the best part is that it only took a few days to complete. With a simple projection screen, a projector, some speakers, and a few cozy backyard upgrades, you can also get your outdoor space ready for movie nights.

My parents’ backyard is basically the hangout spot for our family and they really do love hosting in this space year round.
They are also very serious about their holiday entertaining so we created an outdoor movie theater setup they can use for family parties, summer nights, and backyard hangs.

Plan and Install Posts
The first step was figuring out how large we wanted the movie screen backer to be. The projector screen we purchased was 6 feet wide, so we decided to build the backer to 8 feet wide. We used the miter saw to break down the lumber.
Once we had the size figured out, we measured and marked where the three posts would go, making sure they were evenly spaced, then we dug the holes for each post using a post digger.
Then we added gravel at the bottom of each hole to help with drainage.
Next, we marked how deep the posts needed to sit in the ground and placed them into the holes.
As I poured the concrete, my dad used a level to make sure each post stayed straight. This part was definitely easier with two people.
Make the Backer
While the concrete dried, I focused my attention on cutting, sanding, and staining the 1 x 4 slat boards for the backer. I also stained the posts to match.
Once everything was dry, I added the 1 x 4 slats to the 4 x 4 posts. I used a brad nailer to secure each board and Dad checked with a level as we worked to keep everything straight. To keep the spacing consistent between boards, we used a scrap 2 x 4 as a spacer.
This part came together pretty quickly, and once the slats were installed, the backyard movie theater really started to take shape.
Install The Projector Screen
After the backer was finished, it was time to add the actual projector screen. I attached a small hook to the backer to hang the screen off of. I did have to remove the screen from the housing it came in, but once it was mounted, it worked perfectly for this setup.
Final Touches
The final step was to decorate! We brought in a new dining table, chairs, a bench, a fire pit, outdoor lighting, and an umbrella, to help make the space feel more like an outdoor living room.
We also added solar powered bluetooth rock speakers that pair with the projector. My parents keep the projector on a rolling bar cart, which makes it easy to set up and move around when needed.
I love how this DIY outdoor movie theater turned out, it’s such a fun way to make a backyard feel more useful, inviting, and ready for entertaining.
