The Best Paint Color for Ceilings, According to Real Estate Pros

One of the most stylish things to do in any home is to “break” the fifth wall, also known as the ceiling, and douse it in a brilliant hue or an eye-popping pattern. But if you’re looking to soon sell your home — or are anxious about embracing trends for fear that it may impact your resale value — you may find yourself wondering if this look is right for you. Or, at the very least, stressing over which shade to choose, whether you choose to stick with a trusted shade of white (Sherwin-Williams for the win!) or an otherwise bold, dramatic hue altogether. A ceiling’s paint color can subtly affect how bright, spacious, warm, or finished a room feels, so choosing the right one is worth a little extra consideration.

To help take some of the guesswork out of the equation, I spoke with a few decor and real estate pros on whether painting your ceilings makes sense, plus how to determine which color will work best in your home. That duo is Seattle-based real estate agent Katie Melton of Every Door Real Estate — plus Jenna Somers, a former client turned homebuyer and avid home decorator. After embarking on this project together, the two share their advice on everything from stylish (but seller-friendly!) shades to understanding when it’s best to leave your ceiling be.

A fresh coat of paint never hurt anyone, but how should you decide if it’s worth painting right now? Somers shared a few factors she considers when evaluating her ceilings.

Lastly, consider your motivation for painting your ceiling. If you’re doing it because it makes you happy, great! But Melton cautions against seeing that fresh coat of paint as a strategy to get a bigger payoff when you sell later on. “It’s more something that should be on your list of things to do to prepare for selling,” she says. Your ceiling may need another coat of paint after five years anyway.

While no one shade of white is better than the rest, Melton suggests sticking to a flat or matte finish — rather than a shiny gloss. Where you live may influence your decision, too. “Here in the Pacific Northwest, it’s dark nine months out of the year, so most people are going to paint their ceilings white to brighten up the room,” Melton says. 

Somers favors warm whites over cooler whites, which she says can feel too clinical and uninviting in a home. Still, what if you’re tired of white and ready to take some risks? Melton shared some handy guidelines to help you create the ceiling of your dreams without going overboard. 

Just remember: you can never go wrong with a matte white, and if you’d rather not paint, keeping your ceilings clean will go a long way.
