It Was Hard Acknowledging That She Couldn’t Have Everything She’d Envisioned in the Space

“The hardest part was realizing there were just some things that weren’t in the cards,” Mary expresses. Mary and her husband had hired a professional construction crew to demo everything and do the more technical upgrades — like the plumbing.

But there were a few instances of miscommunication, and Mary simply had to roll with it. For instance, she wished she had bullnose tiles capping off the wall tile, even though “having it edged in silver is more true to ’50s style.”

“I was out of town when they installed it, so by the time I got home, it was all done, and they had basically wrapped the job,” Mary explains. She wishes that she’d advocated for herself more.

“Also, we paid for beautiful crown molding, but there really wasn’t a way to incorporate it with the open shelves, so we didn’t have them install it,” Mary says. “Now it’s all sitting in my basement.”

Hopefully, the crown molding can be used in another project, but this was just one of a few aspects that didn’t make it into the final renovation. Mary had also hoped to add a light in the shower, but after speaking with an electrician, they recommended a location for the switch “in a really funky place” that she didn’t like.

Mary realizes now that “no question is too small, and wanting to confirm or clarify something is nothing to feel embarrassed about.”
